October 30th 2008, Update

Today is the first day after a long time that we've got some positive answers from the doctors.

Triplet 1 has gained 60g and he's going to get his full feeds today since his feeds have been increasing 1ml every tow hours. Now his weight is 1.87kg. Antibiotics for his infection will be stopped after 3 days.

Triplet 2 has gained 25g and improving. Everything else is the same.

We requested our doctors to shift both of them to room at once since they are doing ok. But the doctors said that only one will be shifted and we have to re admit our girl in hospital and they will see how we care and how we manage feeds to both of them and shift the other baby. But we don't have enough money to re admit our girl again so we are talking to our doctors.
But the best thing is that one baby will be shifted to room tomorrow.
And the worst thing is that we dont have enough money to pay their bills. But we have been keeping up with the help of our family and we will try to keep up.
Lets see what comes next....

Some pictures of my baby girl....

Triplet 2 PDA re-opens....

Today 26th October 2008, we thought that we will ask the doctor to take triplet 2 home if he gains another 20g. And yes he has gained weight but not 20g its 110g which is not usual. When the doctors examined him and listened to his heartbeats they heard what is called a heart murmur which means that his PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) is open.

What is patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)?
Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a condition in which the connecting blood vessel between the pulmonary artery and the aorta in fetal circulation, called the ductus arteriosus, stays open in a newborn baby.

Because the placenta does the work of exchanging oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) through the mother's circulation, the fetal lungs are not used for breathing. Instead of blood flowing to the lungs to pick up oxygen and then flowing to the rest of the body, the fetal circulation shunts (bypasses) most of the blood away from the lungs. In the fetus, blood is shunted from the pulmonary artery to the aorta through the ductus arteriosus. However, with the first breaths of air the baby takes at birth, the fetal circulation changes. A larger amount of blood is sent to the lungs to pick up oxygen. Because the ductus arteriosus is no longer needed, it normally begins to wither and close off.

What causes patent ductus arteriosus?
Some babies are more likely to have PDA, especially premature babies. Babies with respiratory problems at birth may have a difficult time increasing the pressure inside the lungs and changing the blood flow. PDA is also a common congenital (present at birth) heart defect and may occur along with other heart defects. It is twice as common in females as in males.

Why is patent ductus arteriosus a concern?
Problems are more likely to occur if the opening of the PDA is large. The shunting causes too much blood to flow to the lungs and not enough to the other parts of the body. There may be changes in the blood pressure, and the heart may enlarge as it tries to make up for the abnormal blood flow. Babies with PDA may be at risk for infection or inflammation of the arteries. Severe PDA can cause slow growth, and may result in heart failure. In premature babies, PDA can complicate respiratory problems, making the distributing of oxygen more difficult.

What are the symptoms of patent ductus arteriosus?
Babies with small PDAs may not have any observable symptoms, but those with a larger opening often do. The following are the most common symptoms of PDA. However, each baby may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

strong pulses
heart murmur
enlarged heart size
respiratory difficulty
cyanosis (blue coloring)
The symptoms of PDA may resemble other conditions or medical problems. Always consult your baby's physician for a diagnosis.

How is patent ductus arteriosus diagnosed?
In addition to a complete medical history and physical examination (especially listening to the heart for sounds of the murmur that are common with PDA), diagnostic procedures may include:

electrocardiogram - a test that records the electrical activity of the heart, shows abnormal rhythms and, detects heart muscle damage.

x-ray - a diagnostic test which uses invisible electromagnetic energy beams to produce images of internal tissues, bones, and organs onto film.

echocardiogram - a noninvasive test that uses sound waves to produce a study of the motion of the heart's chambers and valves.

cardiac catheterization (when other heart defects are suspected) - a test in which a small catheter (hollow tube) is guided through a vein or artery into the heart to help see any defects on x-ray.
Treatment of patent ductus arteriosus:
Specific treatment for patent ductus arteriosus will be determined by your baby's physician based on:

your baby's gestational age, overall health, and medical history
extent of the disease
your baby's tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
expectations for the course of the disease
your opinion or preference
Small PDAs may not require treatment or may close without treatment.

In premature babies, an aspirin-type drug called indomethacin is often given. Indomethacin has been shown to be very effective in causing the PDA to close. Further studies are being done to find out if it will also help prevent PDA in babies at risk for the condition.

If a PDA does not respond to medication, or is due to causes other than prematurity, surgery may be needed. This surgery is called ligation and involves placing a suture around the ductus to close it.

This is what he is today... everyone plss help me handle myself. I dont know what to do.

Triplet 1
He is improving and gained 20g. His feeds are 4ml every two hours.

Finally one home and two more to go....

Triplet 1 is very ill. He has lost 40g. He need a blood transfusion.
They are doing a test called lumbar puncture to check more about his blood infection
His feeds is made very low.
Due to the infection his billurubin has gone very high so they are giving medication to protect his liver and they are going to do ultra sounds to check his liver condition and bladder condition.

Triplet 2
He has been losing weight and doctors are going to do some more test to see why he is losing weight when he is fully fed.
Urine tests and some other tests.

I met Dr. Joythi just now. She said that the pedriatic surgeon has seen my triplet and he has taken X rays which shows that he has some problem in passing stool. Some of his stool are stuck in his intestine which is making his stomach enlarge.

October 19th 2008

Sorry, i will write up previous stories later....
Yesterday i was told that either my baby girl or triplet 2 will be shifted to a normal room since they were progressing and gaining weight. Me, my wife and our family were very happy. My wife packed their clothes and made all the baby stuff ready. Suzy was really happy. I saw her smiling and all excited after a long time. We couldnt wait to hold our baby girl, atleast i will get to hold her as much as i want.We came to NICU on time.
But nothing went as we wanted. My eldest boy has some stomach problem so they are going to consult a pedriatic surgeon and they are going to stop his feeds temporarily. But, 'why my child?' i keep thinking to myself..Im so pissed off..And the worst is that my other boy and girl had lost 20g and 35g so, the doctors have decided not to shift them to the room. My heart is broken.... and i really don't know how suzy felt. Im sure she feels million times worse than me. Damn!!! But why us?
So this is the update of today for now. i dont know what to do. Im so helpless. Sometimes i feel like i should take them all out of that NICU but....
Lots of money....
We are broke and we dont have anything...Both mine and suzy's parents are also broke, and yet, they still have daughters to take care of.
My father has being trying to get money from people as loans....which i never wanted in my life. I dont know how to thank my parents...
Suzy's parents gave all their savings..... and i dont know how to thank them.
Our family is broke.... but we are still trying to hold on as we are requesting help from the govenment
HAMIDBE thanx for being there with me.... all your advices helps me. Thanx a lot.

First time i saw my babies...

After a restless 8 and half hours it was time to see my babies. I was with my father since he just came to see them and was going to go back to male'. At exactly 1900hrs they told us to enter. Everybody ran inside but their grandfather had to wait till the feeding time was over. After a two minute handwash and wearing a green coloured coat for sterilising purposes, i entered NICU.All i could hear was beeping sound from the monitors connected to the babies which shows their pulse rates BP and etc. I couldnt recognised my babies. With the help of a sister i went and saw my first and eldest triplet 1. i thought i will be happy to see them but... all i could see was blue light (photo therapy) which made my eyes irritate. His eyes were covered and taped to protect from the light. One IV connected to one hand another protene IV connected to his other hand and Lipid Iv connected to his leg probe inserted into his tummy to check his body temperature and i dont know what.........all these wires connected. As i saw my second baby he was also the same. I looked at my third baby and she was also the same. They all looked like they were under some experiment. I really don't know how to explain what i felt. I didn't want to cry... but to be strong.. just for them and my family. I knew if allowed myself to be broken, my family will be even more devastated. So i smiled...took a deep breath and yes, touched my babies. The sister came at that moment and asked me whether i wanted to see my triplet 1's eyes. They removed the tape and i saw my baby's eyes for the first time. And guess what.....i called him "dharifulhaa" hehe salhi.... and guess what..... he did open his eyes and looked at me.Suddenly the security came and told me that my 30 minutes was over. It felt like i was with them only for a second. So i went out and with the docs permission i told my dad to come in and see them. He came and he called "kaafa loabee" and this time too he opened his beautiful eyes. Bappa was very happy but he didnt touch them that much and i knew he was hiding his emotions. We were not allowed to see the other triplets' eyes. They all were very small but that didn't bother me that much.We went back to our room after another 10 minutes and yes i had to act that everything was normal for the sake of my family's happiness.. .. but deep down i was bottling up my feelings ...

The day i was meant to see my triplets....

Finally this is the day that my wife told me that i'll see my babies. 4th October 2008. hehe. The happiest day of my life. Couldn't wait to see them. After so many months. But before that, there is THE NEWS CONFERENCE as i call it, where the fathers' have to meet the duty doctors in NICU every morning at 1030hrs. This is where they tell us the progress of our babies.I went on time that day to meet the doctor hoping to get all positive stuff from him. But nop that wasnt going to happen. I was told all negatives.
My girl (triplet 3) as they all call her, were still breathing with the help of ventilator...
My triplets, all of them had lost weight, avg 60g....
And worst is that i could see them at 1900hrs that night......

I reached b'lore....

i reached bangalore the night my triplets were born. I saw my wife at about 2345hrs. She told me that father is allowed inside NICU for half an hour every 24 hours. And i could see them the next day during the father visiting hours.

Our Triplets...

Born on 03rd October 2008
Triplet 1 - Boy 1.56kg 0902 hrs
Triplet 2 - Boy 1.52kg 0903 hrs
Triplet 3 - Girl 1.66kg 0904 hrs
Nobody could take pictures since they all were hurried to NICU because of their low weight and prematurity. Two boys did not have any major problem but girl was having some breating difficulty. She was put on a ventilator in NICU.
My wife had to go through an emergency c-section due to high blood pressure on that day.
The sadest part is that their father wasnt there to see them. I was in male' and couldnt reach to see them.
